The certificate of Canine Good Citizen is often required by landlords and homeowner insurance companies as proof of a dog's good behavior. The CGC title is also a requirement for therapy dogs. It is also recommended that service dogs and emotional support dogs also have a Canine Good Citizen certificate or title. Additionally, the Canine Good Citizen Program also lays the foundation for other AKC activities such as competitive obedience, agility, tracking and performance events. THE PREP COURSE
This is a six week preparation course for the CGC exam which consists of 10 separate tests. Along with becoming familiar with the expectations of the CGC evaluator, you will get tips and practical experience in training your dog to overcome any issues that may lead to failure. This is a class for social dogs who are already familiar with the very basic commands ("sit", "stay", "down", "come") can walk on a leash and work in a group setting. For dogs that are leash agressive we suggest you take the Street Obedience course first.
Taking this course DOES NOT guarantee that you will pass the AKC Good Citizen Exam, but it does prepare you for the test by giving you and your dog the practice and tools your dog will need to perform at his/her best.
THE TEST. WHAT YOUR DOG MUST DO IN ORDER TO PASS:
Greets a friendly stranger
Sits politely for petting.
Welcomes being groomed, brushed, allows paws and ears to be handled
Walks as directed on a loose leash
Moves politely through a crowd
Sits, lies down and stays in place on command
Comes when called
Behaves around other dogs
Reacts with confidence to distractions
Can be left with a trusted person
As per AKC rules, the prep course teacher and the test evaluator cannot be one in the same person. For those who feel ready, at the end of the course we will be scheduling Canine Good Citizen tests with an official AKC test evaluator. There will be a separate fee $25 fee for the test. The AKC charges $8 for a certificate and $20 for title registration.
All breeds and all ages of dogs are welcome to take the course and test. As per AKC requirements, all dogs must be fully vaccinated.
