ADOPT A DOG

We often come across some awesome working/sporting dogs that need a home. Please check here before you buy.

Meet Magda

DSC08573

Magda is a pure Dutch Shepherd, which is a relatively rare breed in America,
so  you can imagine our surprise when we came across her on death row of the
Lacy street shelter a few weeks ago.  If you've met Attila, our male Dutch
Shepherd, Magda looks and acts exactly like him, but is smaller.  Dutch
Shepherds (aka Hollandse Herders) are highly active dogs that need a lot of
exercise and a ton of mental stimulation. These dogs are the ultimate
working and sport dog, they are known for their extreme bravery, sound
nerves, intelligence,  loyalty, athleticism and endurance. They are similar
to the Belgian Malinois but are brindle in color. The US govt imports Dutch
Shepherds to be used in law enforcement, border patrol and the military; our
LAPD and Sherif's dept has a few in their K9 dept.  Dutch Shepherds are
excellent choices for civilian work such as SAR and detection and for sports
like  agility, nose-work, dock diving and frisbee. What makes them a great
working dog is their extreme "drive" which can also make them quite a
difficult house pet if not given enough exercise and training.  Dutchies
need a strong leader and it is recommended that they only go to experienced
working-dog handlers.
That said, Magda is somewhat of an exception to the rule. Although she is
true to her breed in terms of intelligence, athleticism and drive,  she is
quite polite and does not have the "sharpness" and "hardness" that  usually
comes with the Dutchie package.  She would not be good for bite-work but
would excel at other sports.  Magda is about 11 to 16 months old, stunningly
beautiful and healthy. She is spayed, chipped and vaccinated. She weighs
about 60 lbs, but could gain a few. She is fantastic with all dogs (big and
small) and people (young and old) and would be most happy in a household
with dogs or kids. She is a bit clingy and will follow you everywhere, but
with time she will get more independent. She is very sweet and loves to
cuddle yet  is very playful and rambunctious. She has tremendous energy and
needs an owner that can give her a lot of exercise and mental stimulation.
She would be great as a jogging, skateboarding or biking partner.  Our
requirements for adoption are that she be allowed to live INSIDE the house
and that she not be left alone for more than 6 hours a day. We would prefer
she go to a very active household, preferably with other dogs.    Magda's
nickname is "Easy Rider" because she travels so well and can go anywhere
with her handler. Her adoption fee is $200 which covers  the shelter
expenses  and leaves a little left over to rescue more dogs via the LA
Belgian Malinois & Dutch Shepherd Action League. If you are interested in
We also have a Malinois for adoption and know of other Dutch Shepherds
available for adoption. Please let us know if you are interested in adopting
these breeds.
